Wedding Reception Toast Traditions
Traditionally, the first toast at a wedding reception is given by the best man, followed by the maid or matron of honor. The best man often speaks about the couple, shares a meaningful memory about the groom, and offers warm wishes for their marriage. The maid or matron of honor may then share memories of the bride, celebrate the couple’s relationship, and raise a glass to their future together.
Parents are also frequently invited to give toasts, especially the father or parents of the bride. In many families, a parent’s toast is a heartfelt welcome to guests and a reflection on watching their child begin this new chapter. The groom, and sometimes the bride, may also offer a thank-you toast during the reception to express gratitude to parents, the wedding party, guests, and everyone who helped make the day possible.
That said, there is no single rule for who traditionally gives toasts at a wedding reception. Every family, faith tradition, and celebration has its own rhythm. Some couples keep the microphone with just two or three speakers so the evening stays relaxed. Others include siblings, grandparents, close friends, or both sets of parents. For a Christian wedding, a loved one may also choose to include a brief blessing, prayer, or reflection on faith and covenant, if that feels true to the couple.
A helpful approach is to choose speakers whose words will add meaning without making the timeline feel rushed. Let each person know the expected length in advance; two to four minutes is often plenty of time for a sincere, memorable toast. You can also decide whether speeches will happen before dinner, between courses, or after the meal. Sharing this plan with your coordinator, DJ, and videographer helps preserve the natural flow of the reception.
These spoken words often become some of the most cherished parts of a wedding film. The laughter, pauses, happy tears, and stories behind a toast bring the day’s larger story to life in a way photos alone cannot. At For All Time Films, we thoughtfully capture these meaningful voices alongside your vows and quiet in-between moments.
